Carlin, Nevada (Eureka County)
- Found in 1925
- Mining began 1929
- Produced a selection of the largest turquoise nuggets in history
- Unique, easy to spot color spider web matrix from black to golden brown
- Color grade from extremely dark blue to light blue (occasionally green tints)
- Darkest shades are rare and highly valued by collectors
- Mine closed to turquoise mining in 1976
- The mine is currently being exploited for gold only
The last owner of the mine, Dowell Ward, extracted a substantial stockpile of high-quality turquoise that is still coming to market, and is considered one of the highest grade turquoise to ever be discovered. Demand for high-grade turquoise is causing depletions in many of the most sought-after types. Once the No.8 gem quality turquoise is depleted it will never be available again, making it highly sought after, very valuable, and becoming ever-increasing in price.
